Erin and Richard, Wedding at the Glen Magna farms in Danvers,MA
Things are a bit hectic at the moment (maybe my busiest month in the last three of four years), but I just wanted to quickly
post this really lovely wedding I had the honor of shooting a few weeks ago. To sum it up: New England Weddings in the Summertime are great! -
Allison and Mike, Wedding at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum; Chicago, Illinois
Butterflies, rainbows, incredible storm clouds, and friends and family that know how to cut a rug; what more could one hope for on their wedding day (maybe a unicorn?)

Margaret and Ali, Wedding at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens; Brooklyn, New York
I am sort of a huge fan of weddings at Botanical Gardens. Add in a house made entirely of glass for the reception site, and you have the recipe for what is one of the loveliest possible conditions for photographing a wedding. We were also lucky enough to have a bit of time (around an entire hour!) and great weather for portraits. We went to the new park that just opened up around Dumbo, which may well be my new favorite spot in New York (at the very least it ties with the current holder of my affection, the High line park).

Amanda and Jake, Wedding on Fire Island, Long Island, New York
Amanda and Jake had a really beautiful wedding on Fire Island on a warm Summer day a few weeks ago, replete with special dances, secret handshakes, and more dancing than I thought was possible outside of a night club. I always love getting to shoot wedding ceremonies on the beach; the pictures always have a really unique feel.

Rachel and Adrian – Wedding at Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson Arizona
Rachel and Adrian had an incredible wedding at a Ranch on the outskirts of Tucson a few days ago. The ranch was incredible (and was so intrinsically ‘ranchy’ that they actually used to film the Nickelodeon show “Hey Dude” there). Sort of the neatest thing about the wedding was that Rachel chose to have the ceremony in a cactus field out in the sticks a bit (with nary a building nor any other hint of man’s existence to be seen.)
I think they ended up outside because the light was a bit better than inside, but whatever their motivation, I was happy because I thought it made for really neat pictures.
Rachel had her own dress made from scratch!
The downside to having a wedding in a cactus field is that photographers tend to get caught up in taking pictures, and don’t think as much about how sharp and point pretty much everything around them is; which could perhaps end up leaving some photographers of the clumsy type in quite a prickly situation (specifically me).
LASER EYES!
I had so much fun taking all of these portraits and there were so many great ones, it was actually super difficult to narrow it down to just a few. The light in the Sonoran desert around dusk is just incredible, and a photographer could not have asked for nicer scenery. I found myself really wishing I didn’t have to get the bride and groom to the reception, because I could have spent all evening making them run around the cacti posing for portraits.
There weren’t a ton of lights once it got dark, which gave one the distinct impression of dancing under the most beautiful field of twinkling stars.
The day after the wedding the bride and groom met up with the team for brunch in the hotel John Dillinger was captured at in
in downtown Tucson. -
Stephanie and Bill! Wedding at the Villa Del Sol in Fullerton CA, August 2009
Stephanie and Bill had a lovely wedding. The service was held on the campus of Biola University, and it had one of the neatest chapels I have ever seen. The reception spot was just as lovely; it was held in a large courtyard, but had plenty of shade and room to move around. Better yet, there was a roof that was made for a photographer in need of a nice spot for quick sunset portraits. All of that aside, Bill and Stephanie were just so happy to be with each other and fun and easy to work with that there wedding could have been held in a swamp, and I think it still would have made for lovely pictures.

(Mostly) Non Wedding Photo Post: Awards and Gallery Shows
This isn’t at all a wedding photo post (more updates coming soon, I have been traveling non-stop lately), but I was sort of pleased, and wanted to revel in it a little. I just won a bit of an award for a project I finished not too long ago. Specifics (along with a modest gallery) can be seen at the link below if you are interested in seeing more, or some of the others who won awards along with me (there is some good stuff in there, although fair warning; some of the other winners have projects that are a bit on the graphic side)

Also of note, I just returned from a photography festival in Texas called ‘Fotofest’, where I had a gallery show (it will be going on for the next few weeks for anyone in Texas who might care to stop by and see it in person). A few more details can be found here at the link below, but there aren’t really images or anything on their website.

Finally, this is a month or so old at this point, but I also won an award (image below) from the Wedding Photojournalism Association for an image I took a while back. This award is especially sweet because it is one of my favorite wedding pictures of 2009, and I am glad other people got to see it. All in all not a bad month
